AHHHH
Last seen by Kristen and I, as leaving class this morning. String all rolled up on table, and pissy janitor mysteriously lurking nearby.
PROBLEM
Logistics - IMPORTANT
Unfortunately, after we all left, OCAD security took down our web. This is despite them watching us build for many hours, having one security guard tell us what we were doing was OK, and the Faculty of Design advising us that we could begin construction on Tuesday. Apparently we needed a special permit...
All is not lost, we have all the rope, we just need to re-build, and thankfully we have time!
PLEASE ARRIVE EARLIER DUE TO THIS.
Cya all soon
Dave
Logistics- Tuesday Evening's Events
Thanks to all those who came out.
I think it could use a bit more development in some spots, but at least we have something. If you would like to add more to the web, we have more string available. We ended up using bricks and a recycling bin to create 4 "node points" on the floor.
The "Look"
-Josh, amazingly, has some blacklights! He's going to bring them in with some extension cords, and possibly a power bar??
-I am going to bring in a string of christmas lights. If they look bad we won't use them ;D
-I also have a giant spider. I am going to bring him in because I love him ;D. If people don't like him, we won't use him either.
Hard Construction:
-Done(ish). If there are those who wish to add more to the web, please see Katie for the remaining rope. She has put this, and the bins full of pens and pegs in the 1st year workshop. Katie can be in after 10 AM.
Questions:
-Andrea, Nolan and I will be meeting tomorrow near our web at 10AM to cut the question sheets I will be printing up at the print shop tomorrow morning. Andrea and Nolan: please bring a cutting utensil of some sort. Thanks!
Promotions:
-will be building footprints that lead from the lobby to our web
-will be handing out pencils around OCAD to promote
Treasurer:
-Please allow some of the budget for some minor printing costs (shouldn't be over 10$)
Documentation:
-are all aboard tomorrow, Miriam and Kristen around 12:30, Julian possibly 8:30AM
Logistics:
- Shona will be at the web at 10AM
Thanks all! Let me know if I forgot anything!

Touching the Ground. . .
I've sent your project description to the other instructors, with the following disclaimer.
Section 12 will be occupying the roofscape of the Mader-Caldwell Passageway. No part of their installation will infringe below 6"8'. They will avoid the wall across from the washrooms.
The more that I think about it, the more I realize that you shouldn't/can't touch the ground. The passageway is a major means of egress (read: fire exit), and we need to keep it clear.
Tori had a good idea. If you establish "node points," by wrapping around the columns, and perhaps by establishing a limited number of stick-on hooks on the surrounding walls, your web can emanate from these points. There's a ton of "roofscape" to occupy. This also means that you can build the whole web on Tuesday night. But remember to have a guard on Wednesday morning.
In short, please keep your installation above 6"8" (not including the questions).
Tuesday Morning Message from Jesse
Things are coming together nicely! Great effort from most of you over the weekend.
Anyone who is lost and feels like they have nothing to do should contact Shona (princessbeautifulperfect@gmail.com) or David (david.mcinerney@mac.com). Remember, your Project Three mark is largely determined by your active participation. There's still lots to do. . .
Once things are set up, I recommend that someone volunteer to "guard" your installation, especially on Wednesday morning from 8:30AM onwards.
Please be considerate when making modifications to the passageway, and please be considerate with regards to the other installations that will soon be surrounding you. There are installations in the Auditorium, the Lounge, in the lobby and on the large wall in the passageway. You'll have to co-ordinate with the other installations on the fly. Make sure that whatever you do doesn't affect any other instructor/class. Trust me - I'll hear about it, and then you'll hear about it.
I won't be able to check the blog again until 7PM, so give me a call if you need anything. My phone may be off, but I'll check my messages periodically. 647.201.4255.

Logistics - Tuesday Night Construction
Logistics
Could you please post,
- how much money has already been spent by individual teams
- estimated money yet to be spent and on what items.
- list who is yet to contribute $25.
Logistics "News Feed" 3
-neon/dayglo string for the web. To use a bit of white string was tabled as well, but not decided upon.
-white paper or card for the Q&A cards.
-clothespins for attaching
-writing utensils: pencils for sure. Markers/felts have also been tabled but a consensus was not reached for this. We have some felts that have been donated by Joanne. I suggest we have those available as well as the pencils just for variety.
-we are going to see if we like the look of having some strings reach the floor. We are going to try white balloons filled with sand as weights for this. Other suggestions have been bricks and tape.
Treasurer:
-Diandra will be buying neon string to build our web with.
-Diandra will be buying 3 bins for: clothespins, questions, writing implements, and white balloons.
-has collected 25$ from numerous people, but not all. If you haven’t gotten your money to Diandra please try to do so ASAP.
Materials and Construction:
Those who are available from the construction team, please meet tomorrow at 6:30 PM in the lobby. There are people from other groups that will be available to help as well.
The idea is to build a skeleton of our web structure and flag any unforseen problems we have, so that we have plenty of time on Wednesday to solve them if needs be. Any construction done Tuesday evening should be not block traffic through the area. A suggestion has been made that we:
-attach our strings to the pipes on the ceiling
-measure down to where we want the string to attach on the pillars or floor
-then hook or loop those long strings that would hinder traffic over a pipe until final construction on Wednesday.
...any strings that we want to attach from pipe to pipe across the ceiling, can obviously be done as it doesn’t hinder traffic.
Questions:
-Andrea will be collecting all the questions together and sending them to Joanne and I to print.
Promotions:
-Wednesday, build a visual lure to our installation. Ideas tabled have been:
- a string with papers with various logos (question marks, spider web etc)
-footprint cutouts on the floor
-doing promo work tomorrow in various places
Logistics:
The majority of the construction will still need to be done on Wednesday. I can be there at 9:30 in the morning. If everyone could send me what time they are available on Wednesday, that would be wonderful. We will need to have at least one person with our installation throughout the day.
A random web design- by Shona
In this proposal, I'm assuming that it will be darkish because of the projection, and so I would have a couple black lights and some strands of coloured rope/string going through the web that would pick that up. The rest could be the hemp/twine/wool already suggested. All rope and string is reusable, so I don't really think that is an issue.
I also made a banner, but kinda think it might be neat if each letter was on a separate piece of paper and hanging either from the pipes or from the web itself.
I would also propose a string of christmas lights as one or two of the strands to add a little extra light.
Anyway, I'm sure NO ONE likes this idea ;D but I thought I'd try to start a dialogue of what this should look like. If we get there on Wednesday with all our construction materials and no rough idea for what we need to build it'll be more painful than it needs to be.
over and out,
Shona
The space available to us-some photos
Hi everybody,
So we have to share the passageway if we are going to use it. Katie, and I had a look at it today, and we think there's a lot of potential for the corridor between the wall that is going to have a projection on it, and the the doors to the auditorium. Unfortunately we has of yet been unable to contact the other team, but we'll keep trying. I've included some photos of the space. Please have a look at them and if you have any ideas for the "look" of the web, post a rough drawing so we can start to visualize what this experience will look like.
Issues to address might be:
-where is the question box? what does it look like? is it on a small or big table?
-the web: messy or tidy? Or mostly tidy with a few random strings thrown in for visual interest?
-what colour (or colours) is the string?
-Do we need a sign/banner posted above the web?
-Do we want our interaction description posted somewhere so that people understand the point of our interaction? Where would it be?
Class Tonight - 6PM
Just a reminder that we have class tonight, in the Great Hall (by the snack bar). Let's meet at 6PM, so that those with 6:30 class can meet with us at the beginning.
Every team should be prepared to briefly discuss the status of their tasks. We won't waste too much time meeting. I'll be around until 9:00 to help any teams that need it.

Project 3-Materials and Construction
nobody has responded to the last post so we are meeting tomorrow at 1 in the front lobby to discuss this event. I am assuming with no comments that it works for everyone. Andrea has also posted that we meet at 4:30 to bring in our questions. See you all then.
Logistics "News Feed" 2
- There is another class also using the Mader/Caldwell Passageway which produces a space constraint for us. "They'll be projecting onto the west wall across from the washrooms." Please add your thoughts here or create a blog post with your suggestions.
- No team met at the school on Saturday. This was mainly due to Easter family commitments
- Questions team has requested that "we all could look around our houses and find other kinds of paper, like construction paper, etc then we won't have to purchase anything new".
- Several potential questions have been posted here.
- Promotions has finished the t-shirts and they will be given out on Monday night.
- The Construction team has yet to confirm on the blog when and where they are meeting. Please also consult with the Documentation team.
- Hemp Rope and Wool have been suggested as Recyclable, Reusable and/or Redeployable material to construct the web.
- A "project description" has been posted.
- Class is on MONDAY in the Great Hall from 6.30 to 9.30. At least one member from every team is expected to be there.
- Please give $25 to the Treasurer on Monday night, (if we keep under budget we will get some money back!). So far only $65 out of a potential $550 has been spent. **update - more than $65 has been spent thus far**
Logistics posts include a brief summary and generally only information that has been posted to the blog is included. If you feel something important is missing, please comment or make a separate blog post. We only have 2.5 days lefts - the count down is on!
Project Description
We need to develop a "project description" by Monday morning.
So far....
Twenty-two minds join forces to design and construct a physical 'Web of Thought' with the objective of encouraging thoughtful social interaction within the OCAD community. Through the distribution of abstract questions, the 'Web of Thought' captures ideas and invokes debate amongst visitors to the installation, after which, the results will be analysed and submitted to the university governing body.
Comments??
Cheers.
Project 3 - QUESTIONS group - information for creation
I think that using newsprint is a great idea. Maybe if we all could look around our houses and find other kinds of paper, like construction paper, etc then we won't have to purchase anything new. I think they should still be colourful (newsprint isn't very attractive) so if we do use newsprint, we should also have a bunch of different kinds of paper as well. i was thinking, we could buy new pens, pencils, pencil crayons (or find them if you can) and get magazines, scissors and glue, in case people want to collage their response. We should think of as many writing utensils as possible. As for the questions, I think we should each do a person's questions plus a bunch of our own.
Derek - do yours and Jesse's questions
Joanne - do yours and Kristen's questions
Nolan - do yours and Miriam's questions
I will do my own plus all the ones we thought of in class. Feel free to edit questions/think of some wild ones. Good luck.
OH! Also - we should make each sheet the same size. How about roughly 10cm x 14cm - that's about the size of 1/4 of an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper.
***Want to meet up before class tomorrow - how about at 4pm in the 2nd floor cafe to discuss/finish up making the questions?
Promotions Update
Facebook Event = Done
On Tuesday Gio, Jennie and I are heading to various locations to promote our event. We will be giving away pencils with the necessary information attached. Yay to no waste, as everybody can use a pencil!
Due to the fact that string may be wasteful, why not use yarn/wool and then give it to old ladies/people that knit.
P.s. T-shirt pictures will be up when I return to Toronto so probably Sunday night / you will see them in the Monday night class.
