Info Poster

Logistics - IMPORTANT

Thank you to every team who worked last night.

Unfortunately, after we all left, OCAD security took down our web.
This is despite them watching us build for many hours, having one security guard tell us what we were doing was OK, and the Faculty of Design advising us that we could begin construction on Tuesday. Apparently we needed a special permit...

All is not lost, we have all the rope, we just need to re-build, and thankfully we have time!

PLEASE ARRIVE EARLIER DUE TO THIS.

Cya all soon

Logistics - Security

Please RSVP via a comment to this blog, your available time commitment for Wednesday. It is imperative that we have at least one person at the installation before the event, from 8.30am to 2.30pm to ensure security. It is expected that everyone in the class will participate between 2.30 and 4.30pm. It is our event!

Thanks

Tuesday Morning Message from Jesse

Hi Class:

Things are coming together nicely! Great effort from most of you over the weekend.

Anyone who is lost and feels like they have nothing to do should contact Shona (princessbeautifulperfect@gmail.com) or David (david.mcinerney@mac.com). Remember, your Project Three mark is largely determined by your active participation. There's still lots to do. . .

Once things are set up, I recommend that someone volunteer to "guard" your installation, especially on Wednesday morning from 8:30AM onwards.

Please be considerate when making modifications to the passageway, and please be considerate with regards to the other installations that will soon be surrounding you. There are installations in the Auditorium, the Lounge, in the lobby and on the large wall in the passageway. You'll have to co-ordinate with the other installations on the fly. Make sure that whatever you do doesn't affect any other instructor/class. Trust me - I'll hear about it, and then you'll hear about it.

I won't be able to check the blog again until 7PM, so give me a call if you need anything. My phone may be off, but I'll check my messages periodically. 647.201.4255.

Logistics "News Feed" 3

Today we ironed out a lot of the wrinkles in the “Look” of our Web of Thoughts. The general consensus:

-neon/dayglo string for the web. To use a bit of white string was tabled as well, but not decided upon.
-white paper or card for the Q&A cards.
-clothespins for attaching
-writing utensils: pencils for sure. Markers/felts have also been tabled but a consensus was not reached for this. We have some felts that have been donated by Joanne. I suggest we have those available as well as the pencils just for variety.
-we are going to see if we like the look of having some strings reach the floor. We are going to try white balloons filled with sand as weights for this. Other suggestions have been bricks and tape.

Treasurer:
-Diandra will be buying neon string to build our web with.
-Diandra will be buying 3 bins for: clothespins, questions, writing implements, and white balloons.
-has collected 25$ from numerous people, but not all. If you haven’t gotten your money to Diandra please try to do so ASAP.

Materials and Construction:
Those who are available from the construction team, please meet tomorrow at 6:30 PM in the lobby. There are people from other groups that will be available to help as well.
The idea is to build a skeleton of our web structure and flag any unforseen problems we have, so that we have plenty of time on Wednesday to solve them if needs be. Any construction done Tuesday evening should be not block traffic through the area. A suggestion has been made that we:
-attach our strings to the pipes on the ceiling
-measure down to where we want the string to attach on the pillars or floor
-then hook or loop those long strings that would hinder traffic over a pipe until final construction on Wednesday.

...any strings that we want to attach from pipe to pipe across the ceiling, can obviously be done as it doesn’t hinder traffic.

Questions:
-Andrea will be collecting all the questions together and sending them to Joanne and I to print.

Promotions:
-Wednesday, build a visual lure to our installation. Ideas tabled have been:
- a string with papers with various logos (question marks, spider web etc)
-footprint cutouts on the floor
-doing promo work tomorrow in various places

Logistics:
The majority of the construction will still need to be done on Wednesday. I can be there at 9:30 in the morning. If everyone could send me what time they are available on Wednesday, that would be wonderful. We will need to have at least one person with our installation throughout the day.

A random web design- by Shona

Here is a rough idea of what a "messy" web of random strings of thoughts might look like...
In this proposal, I'm assuming that it will be darkish because of the projection, and so I would have a couple black lights and some strands of coloured rope/string going through the web that would pick that up. The rest could be the hemp/twine/wool already suggested. All rope and string is reusable, so I don't really think that is an issue.
I also made a banner, but kinda think it might be neat if each letter was on a separate piece of paper and hanging either from the pipes or from the web itself.
I would also propose a string of christmas lights as one or two of the strands to add a little extra light.
Anyway, I'm sure NO ONE likes this idea ;D but I thought I'd try to start a dialogue of what this should look like. If we get there on Wednesday with all our construction materials and no rough idea for what we need to build it'll be more painful than it needs to be.

over and out,
Shona

The space available to us-some photos

Hi everybody,
So we have to share the passageway if we are going to use it. Katie, and I had a look at it today, and we think there's a lot of potential for the corridor between the wall that is going to have a projection on it, and the the doors to the auditorium. Unfortunately we has of yet been unable to contact the other team, but we'll keep trying. I've included some photos of the space. Please have a look at them and if you have any ideas for the "look" of the web, post a rough drawing so we can start to visualize what this experience will look like.
Issues to address might be:
-where is the question box? what does it look like? is it on a small or big table?
-the web: messy or tidy? Or mostly tidy with a few random strings thrown in for visual interest?
-what colour (or colours) is the string?
-Do we need a sign/banner posted above the web?
-Do we want our interaction description posted somewhere so that people understand the point of our interaction? Where would it be?

Class Tonight - 6PM

Hi Class:

Just a reminder that we have class tonight, in the Great Hall (by the snack bar). Let's meet at 6PM, so that those with 6:30 class can meet with us at the beginning.

Every team should be prepared to briefly discuss the status of their tasks. We won't waste too much time meeting. I'll be around until 9:00 to help any teams that need it.

Logistics "News Feed" 2

  • There is another class also using the Mader/Caldwell Passageway which produces a space constraint for us. "They'll be projecting onto the west wall across from the washrooms." Please add your thoughts here or create a blog post with your suggestions.
  • No team met at the school on Saturday. This was mainly due to Easter family commitments
  • Questions team has requested that "we all could look around our houses and find other kinds of paper, like construction paper, etc then we won't have to purchase anything new".
  • Several potential questions have been posted here.
  • Promotions has finished the t-shirts and they will be given out on Monday night.
  • The Construction team has yet to confirm on the blog when and where they are meeting. Please also consult with the Documentation team.
  • Hemp Rope and Wool have been suggested as Recyclable, Reusable and/or Redeployable material to construct the web.
  • A "project description" has been posted.
  • Class is on MONDAY in the Great Hall from 6.30 to 9.30. At least one member from every team is expected to be there.
  • Please give $25 to the Treasurer on Monday night, (if we keep under budget we will get some money back!). So far only $65 out of a potential $550 has been spent. **update - more than $65 has been spent thus far**
The event is this Wednesday between 2.30 and 4.30.

Logistics posts include a brief summary and generally only information that has been posted to the blog is included. If you feel something important is missing, please comment or make a separate blog post. We only have 2.5 days lefts - the count down is on!
where do we meet tomorrow?

Project Description

Hi Guys

We need to develop a "project description" by Monday morning.

So far....

Twenty-two minds join forces to design and construct a physical 'Web of Thought' with the objective of encouraging thoughtful social interaction within the OCAD community. Through the distribution of abstract questions, the 'Web of Thought' captures ideas and invokes debate amongst visitors to the installation, after which, the results will be analysed and submitted to the university governing body.

Comments??
Cheers.

Promotions Update

T-shirts = Done

Facebook Event = Done

On Tuesday Gio, Jennie and I are heading to various locations to promote our event. We will be giving away pencils with the necessary information attached. Yay to no waste, as everybody can use a pencil!

Due to the fact that string may be wasteful, why not use yarn/wool and then give it to old ladies/people that knit.

P.s. T-shirt pictures will be up when I return to Toronto so probably Sunday night / you will see them in the Monday night class.

Space Constraint

It has just come to my attention that another section is also using the so-called Mader/Caldwell Passageway. They'll be projecting onto the west wall across from the washrooms. I'm as annoyed as you are. . .

Can we work around this? Would we prefer to be floating in the lobby? Are you currently planning on stands, or hooks? I'm a little wary of the hooks - I'm definitely going to hear about the marks on the walls from administration. Is it worth me taking the heat? I'm willing, but it has to be worth it.

Jesse on Saturday

Hi Class:

Please give me a call at 647.201.4255 if you want me to come down and meet with you today. I'm not necessarily in the building (as I haven't heard that anyone else is planning to be) but will be nearby. It's totally up to you.

Logistics Update 1

Teams who are available to work at the school between 12 and 5 on Easter Saturday, please post to the blog so that there can be discussion as to a possible meet up. Also, could every group make a post about how you are using materials that are: Recyclable, Reusable and/or Redeployable.
So far....
  • The Documentation team has requested that we try to document our progress while they are not around, and would like to know when activity is planned so they can attend.
  • each class member to contribute 15 questions. It has been suggested that "questions be worded such that they avoid one-word responses". Please write your questions here.
  • Construction team, please advise:
    1. Confirmation that you can all meet on Monday at 1 and for how long.
    2. If you have plans as to how the web could be constructed
  • The Promotions team plan to give out a "writing utensil that had the necessary info on it", and have asked "Have we as a class decided what that should be? Pencil? Chalk? Marker?".
  • It has been advised that progress photos of the t-shirts will be posted this weekend, $65 has already been spent on plain t-shirts.
  • Our facebook event invite is active and as of Friday, we already have about 40 confirmed guests, 42 people might show up and 105 people are missing out.

Feel free to email me (DM07JJ@student.ocad.ca) and Shona (SG07QF@student.ocad.ca), however we also encourage the use of blog posts and comments to communicate.
Thanks!

Idea

In keeping with the objective of “less material waste”, I found this YouTube video about twine/rope made out of hemp...

Toronto Hemp Store, 665 Yonge Street (just south of Bloor Street) sells

“Twine - 170LB 500gms 200ft Polish Natural” for $12.95

Please share your thoughts.

Stuff from Jesse

Hi Class:

I got a message from my boss about Activate a while back that I should have shared with you sooner. Excerpts from this message are shown below.

----------------------------------------------------------
Dear Intro to Experience Design faculty

We made some important decisions/suggestions related to the final project. PLEASE READ IMMEDIATELY:

1) We will be changing the name to

ACTIVATE!!! XX: Experiments in Experience Design (the XX will be a graphic representation referencing the red X’s in the ceiling and also eXperiments in experience… and changing the activation time - 2:30- 4:30 (this works well with Lib Studies courses and allows students to stagger their participation to accommodate being in a class).

2) The project will be taking place in the following locations now, instead of solely in the Park:

· The Great Hall (5-7 projects)
· The Auditorium (5-7 projects
· Lambert Lounge (rm 187), adjoining the Park (2-4 projects)
· The Mader/Caldwell Passageway (2-3 projects)
· The Main Lobby (passing through, not building anything)(1 project – not physical))
· Butterfield Park (if groups really want to use it, they are welcome to do so, but it will not be a centralized, high-energy site this year). (as many as want it)

IDEAS/RATIONALE:

· involve the whole school community
· create a zone of activityfrom Great Hall to Park/Auditorium that pulls people on campus into our experience design experiments and engages them in the ideas
· bring it largely indoors to cope with the earlier date and potential weather problems and COLDNESS factor (as well as participation/community issues)
· allow for some digital media or more ‘virtual’ or technological projects if desired (better electricity too)
· work to a mandate for less heavy construction, less material waste, more mobility…
· ‘carnival’ atmosphere will lessen, and individual experiments gain space to breathe, gain visual presence and better production values - and are seen by more of the OCAD community
· add some written text explanation of the project overall – I will develop that with some help from you. Written blurb from each team would be valuable.

3) We’ll be making a logo banner, possibly referencing the red X’s in the ceiling as XX for Experience Experiments – which all groups can use as part of their promo efforts. I’ll get that to you by next week sometime. Concept: DON’T MAKE A POSTER (make some other form of advertisement for your project - incorporate logo piece).

I will send you additional info shortly, but just wanted to get this to you as I know things are rolling out right now.

Thanks,
Doreen

----------------------------------------------------------

Most of this should not be new to you. But there are three items of importance in this message that we talked about early on and have since forgotten.

1) No Waste! Are the materials used recyclable/reusable/redeployable in some way? THERE MUST BE A RECLAMATION PLAN IN PLACE FOR ALL MATERIALS EMPLOYED. Each team should figure out how they plan to deal with their output after the fact.

2) No Posters! I believe I may have only mentioned this in passing, and I'm sorry it didn't come up on Wednesday. PLEASE DO NOT ANY MORE POSTERS. Try to think of more solutions like the t-shirt that step outside of the poster box. I realize that t-shirts may in fact be just as wasteful as posters . . . but for my sake, let's save this debate until after the event.

3) A Write-up! Could Shona/David please prepare a one-paragraph written description of your installation and post it ASAP?

Things seem to be moving along smoothly and fruitfully . . . remember that if you need my help, I can be around the school tomorrow between 12 and 5.

Project 3 - Promotions Money Spent So Far

So far on just plain tee shirts I have spent $65.54.

Additional costs for posters and such will be posted later.

That is all.
