Greetings From the Zine Team

We've decided to create a Flickr account just for our questions, under the name Web of Thought. Each of us will be taking a bundle of the questions to scan, then we will be binding the questions into four booklets to be put into one "box." The box will be a large book, that Iliana purchased for a dollar, which she will cut four booklet-sized holes into:


this is how it will work. I hope the diagram is clear enough! The book's pages will be glued together.

We will put covers on the booklets and incorporate the photographs that the documentation team took of the Web of Thought. One idea we had was to include blank cards so that whoever reads the booklets can answer questions themselves. On the back of each booklet, or somewhere (perhaps on the cover?) of the large book, we will write the name of the Flickr site they can go to to add more or look at other questions. Also, we will write about the Web of Thought, and how it was made/why we did it/etc. We will put it in OCAD's new Zine Library
and possibly advertise with posters around the school. (Would ads be okay? We aren't sure)
Putting it in a public place will ensure its longevity! Many people will be able to see it for years to come.

Project #3 Activate Aftermath

Things that would have improved “Activate”:

Knowing the rules we had to follow in order to get our installation permit

Change to a more open location (low roof was unattractive spot for the second incarnation of the web)

We should have started planning earlier to make it more professional and less last-minute

Plan B! it was regrettable having to take it apart and rebuild it

More organization, we didn’t know where our spot was

The event could’ve not been scheduled THE WEDNESDAY AFTER EASTER!

More fun maybe? using interesting apparatus etc. maybe rotating clothesline for more physical engagement

It should have been bigger if we could’ve done it

Everything could have been more circular to make it more communal experience

It Could have been more colourful

We could have scheduled meetings better

more vertical separation of string to make it easier to read the cards, maybe put the cards at eye level

Could have been more efficient with distribution of labour

We could have increased the height to make it more prominent

Aesthetics: 2nd incarnation could’ve looked more professional

It could have been put at eye level, maybe used colour paper (Maybe different colours for different questions)

We could have communicated with eachother as agroup more effectively

Aesthetic consistency could have been improved

Should’ve surveyed the area before we even made our proposal rather than the day of the event

Activate Aftermath

Gio, Kaylyn, David, Che and Derek are the Recycling Team. They'll figure out what do with all of the waste material our experience generated. Ideally, material will be redeployed, perhaps as prizes. The Recycling Team will also post a document to the blog that lists all items used (with quantities) and how they were recycled.

Shona, Andrea, Jennie, Katie and Iliana are the 'Zine Creation Team. They'll post a 'Zine concept to the blog for your approval by Friday at midnight. Once they've received your feedback (due Saturday at midnight), they'll proceed to create 'zines from the answers collected in our experience.

Julian S, Joanne, Phil,Kay and Lena are the Prize Team. They'll post a Prize concept (for the Stick It experience) to the blog for your approval by Friday at midnight. Once they've received your feedback (due Saturday at midnight), they'll proceed to create and award a prize. If the prize requires physical delivery, it should be delivered to room 287 (the Stick It room) on Monday at 6:30.

The new teams should continue to document their work. All deliverables should be posted to the blog in some appropriate form by the beginning of next class. Congratulations once again for rallying in the face of adversity and delivering a successful experience!

Prize Group

Prize group idea: To give each student in the class 10 markers (from the left over materials). Each marker will have a label that says "Stick It 2008" and also the question mark logo that are already on the markers. Will do this by some sort of label or sticker.

THE WEB HAS BEEN TAKEN DOWN !!!!!!
Last seen by Kristen and I, as leaving class this morning. String all rolled up on table, and pissy janitor mysteriously lurking nearby.

PROBLEM

WE HAVE A BIG PROBLEM. WHEN I WENT TO CLASS THIS MORNING A JANITOR HAD TAKEN IT ALL DOWN. SO WE HAVE NOTHING NOW. SO I THINK EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET TO THE SCHOOL.

Logistics - IMPORTANT

Thank you to every team who worked last night.

Unfortunately, after we all left, OCAD security took down our web. This is despite them watching us build for many hours, having one security guard tell us what we were doing was OK, and the Faculty of Design advising us that we could begin construction on Tuesday. Apparently we needed a special permit...

All is not lost, we have all the rope, we just need to re-build, and thankfully we have time!

PLEASE ARRIVE EARLIER DUE TO THIS.

Logistics- Tuesday Evening's Events

Well everybody, we have a web built!
Thanks to all those who came out.
I think it could use a bit more development in some spots, but at least we have something. If you would like to add more to the web, we have more string available. We ended up using bricks and a recycling bin to create 4 "node points" on the floor.

The "Look"
-Josh, amazingly, has some blacklights! He's going to bring them in with some extension cords, and possibly a power bar??
-I am going to bring in a string of christmas lights. If they look bad we won't use them ;D
-I also have a giant spider. I am going to bring him in because I love him ;D. If people don't like him, we won't use him either.

Hard Construction:
-Done(ish). If there are those who wish to add more to the web, please see Katie for the remaining rope. She has put this, and the bins full of pens and pegs in the 1st year workshop. Katie can be in after 10 AM.

Questions:
-Andrea, Nolan and I will be meeting tomorrow near our web at 10AM to cut the question sheets I will be printing up at the print shop tomorrow morning. Andrea and Nolan: please bring a cutting utensil of some sort. Thanks!

Promotions:
-will be building footprints that lead from the lobby to our web
-will be handing out pencils around OCAD to promote

Treasurer:
-Please allow some of the budget for some minor printing costs (shouldn't be over 10$)

Documentation:
-are all aboard tomorrow, Miriam and Kristen around 12:30, Julian possibly 8:30AM

- Shona will be at the web at 10AM

Logistics - Security

Please RSVP via a comment to this blog, your available time commitment for Wednesday. It is imperative that we have at least one person at the installation before the event, from 8.30am to 2.30pm to ensure security. It is expected that everyone in the class will participate between 2.30 and 4.30pm. It is our event!

Promotions

The idea of promoting your event by distributing "branded" pencils (with string, etc.) seems really strong to me. I'd concentrate your efforts on the day of the event, all over the school.

Touching the Ground. . .

Hi Class:

I've sent your project description to the other instructors, with the following disclaimer.

Section 12 will be occupying the roofscape of the Mader-Caldwell Passageway. No part of their installation will infringe below 6"8'. They will avoid the wall across from the washrooms.

The more that I think about it, the more I realize that you shouldn't/can't touch the ground. The passageway is a major means of egress (read: fire exit), and we need to keep it clear.

Tori had a good idea. If you establish "node points," by wrapping around the columns, and perhaps by establishing a limited number of stick-on hooks on the surrounding walls, your web can emanate from these points. There's a ton of "roofscape" to occupy. This also means that you can build the whole web on Tuesday night. But remember to have a guard on Wednesday morning.

In short, please keep your installation above 6"8" (not including the questions).

Hi Class:

Things are coming together nicely! Great effort from most of you over the weekend.

Anyone who is lost and feels like they have nothing to do should contact Shona (princessbeautifulperfect@gmail.com) or David (david.mcinerney@mac.com). Remember, your Project Three mark is largely determined by your active participation. There's still lots to do. . .

Once things are set up, I recommend that someone volunteer to "guard" your installation, especially on Wednesday morning from 8:30AM onwards.

Please be considerate when making modifications to the passageway, and please be considerate with regards to the other installations that will soon be surrounding you. There are installations in the Auditorium, the Lounge, in the lobby and on the large wall in the passageway. You'll have to co-ordinate with the other installations on the fly. Make sure that whatever you do doesn't affect any other instructor/class. Trust me - I'll hear about it, and then you'll hear about it.

I won't be able to check the blog again until 7PM, so give me a call if you need anything. My phone may be off, but I'll check my messages periodically. 647.201.4255.
