Toy Design Sketches - Andrea

One person will read the situation, describing a fictional person who is the target of love, and the rest of the players must write down a pickup line that they think would work best to win over their crush! Everyone will fold their paper and the reader will say them aloud. A vote will determine the favourite pickup line and round winner.

ur ideas are soooo adorable!
1 - Man in Barrel...i really cool; it can be even used in a party for the lights. the only thing that worries me is that a normal barrel will be soo heavy to carry around unless you make an inflatable or cardboard one. Since I work in a restaurant, it can also be used to embarrass and get attention to birthday people, making them stand up and wear it in the middle of the room and look silly. (we use a huge cowboy hat for that purpose)
2 - Your cupcake idea is pretty sweet! When in a mug, I wander weather you will be able to fool someone that they are drinking beer? that might be funny
3 - Love Stethoscope is neat, but I don't know if it might be a pain to have those sensors put as well as lights for words to come up. The thing is how would you know for which person "I love you" is for...may be it can be something like: "I feel in love" which could be for anyone around on the party OR you can stick to your idea, but lock yourself with someone for a min and then put the stethoscope on. :)
4 - I think this is one of the best ones! The pick-up lines game really matches our age group and it is always fun to find out how to act with he opposite sex. I think there should be someone to read them all out (not the person who they are for), if the paper has the name of the person who wrote it than that means that they are willing to go out with that person who the pickup lines are for, then you can have another box with places for them to go out or things to do! So the reward of thinking of thebest pick up line is to go out on a date with that person!
5 - Juicers are really cute too, I love the idea of crying and the juice coming out! I just think it might be a bit hectic if you are making juice in the morning and wake-up someone or when you have a headache/hangover..may be it can have a mute option too?
6 - the soap surfer is adorable (i like the surfing theme) but it is more for kids who would play in the bath + it will be hard to have a voice box in the toy, yet keep it waterproof.

(Phil's Feedback)

There are many ideas you have come up with that I believe may be successful .
On another note, thanks Dave for giving me some extra feedback, appreciate it.

(man in barrel) . I’m not so sure if this is suppose to be an action figure or something like a Halloween costume where it is worn like a dress. I like the technology you have put into this concept, i.e. the spinning and light features. I can see it being sold at the ‘ IT Store’ or Spensors, or some other gag shop. It doesn’t really have much of a purpose, but it’s entertaining to watch, kind of like a lava lamp. I believe you have better ideas suppose to this one.
( cupcake / ice cream cone traveling mug) This is a concept that has already bin don. My sister actually had one of these when I was younger, however it was in the form of a cartoon cow. The opening was in the lips, so it looked like you were kissing it when you took a sip. The idea of disguised mugs have already bin created.
( true love stethoscope) This is a great idea. It reminds me of a magic 8 ball, however it concerns matters of love, suppose to random questions. I don’t know how you’re going to create this toy considering the technology involved, but go for it if you can. This looks fun to play with.
( love game) I like this idea. I’m not too familiar with love games, so I don’t know if there is one that already exists with the same concept, so I cant comment on that, however you should do some research to make sure there isn’t . This game has a simple concept, and the idea of having players come up with different pick-up lines seems to be a common idea that other games would have already came up with. If this idea is original, I can see it being a hit. It gets people to show their personality in a tense situation such as picking someone up ( tense for me at least). Do some research first on the authenticity of this idea, and if all lights are green, go for it.
( sad juicer) GOOD IDEA!!! Funny, cute, makes preparing freshly squeezed orange juice a fun activity. The idea of a crying juicer seems negative though, and how are you going to create it? The idea that you took an ordinary object and gave it a personality is great. It’s not just a toy, but a tool too. Again, the negative persona of the toy should be changed. Imagining myself watching it cry, I actually feel sorry for it. Maybe change it so its laughing so hard its crying, or change the character to a frog squirting out orange juice out of its mouth. You still get the same ‘cute’ feeling you get with the original model, just in a less depressing form.
( soap surfer) This is a practical idea. People have trouble holding on to a bar of soap, this is why some soaps are manufactured with ropes attacked to them, for extra grip. Your surfer dude is basically the same concept, instead of a rope, the surfer character acts as a pole or a handle. My only concern is the method you choose to attach the bar of soap to the surfer/ handle. I imagine the surfer/ handle piercing the soap through small extensions coming out from his feet. If this is the case, you might have to worry about it hurting someone when the soap withers away, or even whether or not it will even hold. Since there is no explanation of how you plan to have this work, I cannot make further comments.

You have many creative and original ideas. I suggest you stick to your originality and scrap the concepts that seem like they have already bin don. Good job!!

You should have seen the look on my friend Jon's face when I broke one of the legs off of his $200 Philippe Starck juicer (shown on the first page of the Emotional Design reading). . .
